Immediate download of 3-track album in your choice of MP3 320, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire.

chances are you are already one of my friends but if you’re finding your way to this page and you don’t know much about me, hello! i am the mysterious folk songwriting entity known as thick red wine. 90% of the proceeds for my first EP “Come at Me Bro Pt. 1″ will go to planned parenthood (bandcamp.com takes the other %10). i thought i’d do this because: it’s christmas, i have an intense and passionate appreciation for the work that planned parenthood does on a daily basis around the U.S. and they could use the help. so i hope you can offer your support.
i know a lot of people have been rallying against the NDAA bill in the last few weeks and i wholeheartedly support that. but i do still wish there was more support for reproductive health, awareness, education, and access. i’m mostly referring to the plan b fiasco where our president put his politics before science like an out of touch patriarch
anyway i hope you enjoy the songs, donate lots and support the depoliticization of science and the fight for reproductive rights. read on for more about the EP’s title, the songs, etc.
to those of you who enjoy reading…
i wrote the first of these songs last year and it was called “what i really want for xmas.” the other two tracks just seemed like they fit into a song cycle i’ve been privately classifying as “come at me bro” songs. yes, the expression made famous by ronnie of the jersey shore. i do find the “come at me bro” phrase awful and stupid and the product of an awful and stupid (and crazy) world.
but i was thinking about how it’s also a random and perfect chance to directly confront hypermasculinity in a way that isn’t related to sports or militaries. opportunities like that are rare but important. with the popularity of the jersey shore, all kinds of people have had a chance to react to the embarrassing display of “manhood” espoused by the show’s male characters (stoic, homophobic, sex-obsessed, strength/power/violence hungry)
these recordings might not be polished and recorded real nice but the songs strive toward an alternative masculinity that is unspoken but very much real. these are songs to promote respect, patience, humility, expressiveness, open mindedness and cooperation. too many men settle on a stereotype that’s grounded on being emotionless, strong, and stubborn. there are more honorable ways to define an identity.
so #comeatmebro b/c i will defend these messages with everything i have in me. masculinity and femininity could be defined by much more than their limitations if we all encouraged positive gender discussions. and donate to planned parenthood every month or go volunteer! i appreciate you listening, reading, and helping out a good cause. and i hope if you’re new here you’ll sign up for the mailing list or like me on Facebook or follow me on twitter or send me an email (contact@thickredwine.com) introducing yourself so we can be friends : )

about

Bandcamp takes 10% of sales but I'm giving the other 90% of the proceeds for this little EP to Planned Parenthood. So please donate! It will make me all kinds of joyous to give more money to an organization that means so much to me. Planned Parenthood workers change lives every day and they need all the help they can get in the dogfight for reproductive rights, education, awareness, and access. Thanks and I appreciate y'all listening!

xoxo
Mike

Track Name: Meeting Girls
i'd like to meet a skinny girl and fatten her right up
i'd show her what they mean when they say looks are not enough
and i'd bake her brownies every day
as my small special way to say
i'd rather watch you smile than watch you watch your weight

i'd like to meet a hipster girl and piss on all her bands
i'd only play her love songs and she'd want to hold my hand
she'd worry less about dub step
and focus more on enjoying sex
and i'd keep her so damn warm but she'd still feel cool

really i'd just like to find
a girl out there with a like mind
a girl to be my wonderdrug
i'd give her what's left of my love
together we would fear no pain
i'd kiss her in the evening rain
and i'd rip my shirt right off to dry her face
like we were movie stars

i'd like to meet an insecure girl and help her find her pride
in everything that she's become and what she's made of her life
she wouldn't even need me to see
she's the bomb like a WMD
but i'd be there to tell her she's great when she forgets

i'd like to meet a quiet girl and let her talk for hours
she'd open herself up to me and we'd sip on whiskey sours
she wouldn't be scared that i'd use her
so we'd both be a little looser
and she'd be happy to know that i'm just listening

really i'd just like to meet
anyone who would like to meet me
maybe we would hate each other
but we'd go on and find another
some people never try things on
they're too afraid of what could go wrong
it seems strange to me to be scared of what could go right
Track Name: Regulate
we were listening to regulate
both of us were in a fragile state
paper thin and you were using then
every day i thought you’d leave again

but i guess you found a middle ground
between a lover and an underground
i knew i was just your stepping stone
i was happy just to jump your bones

we were listening to regulate
windows down in your old chevrolet
bass that shook us both right out our seats
i was nate dogg, you were warren g

you said you had a thing for dj screw
the way he chopped it up just worked on you
made you have all kinds of naughty thoughts
you slowed it down until he got you off

we were listening to regulate
i was trying to compensate
for being just a bit too far gone
flickin' filters on my neighbor’s lawn

i know you hate that sentimental shit
slurred your words well you were way too ripped
always tryin' hard to act so tough
tellin' me how you had liked it rough

we were listening to regulate
before you turned it down and touched my face
and told me that i had your brother's eyes
last time you saw him you had watched him die

you said you never really knew him well
time has taught you that this world is hell
i hit the buttons, brought our car seats down
and held you tight until the sun came out

we were still listening to regulate

we were listening to regulate
Track Name: Hold You
all your asshole friends they flock to fake breasts
leeches sinking into skin
i hear your heart dance circles round the thought
that you should just be fittin' in

one furtive glance
tells me i
should just bring you home
don't feel alone

i just want to hold you
hold you

streaks of starlight flow like rivers
through the auburn tresses of your hair
climbing up this cobblestone
take your heels off, baby i don't care

unlock your door
let your lab
lick your freckled face
and ask me to stay

i just want to hold you
hold you

posters on your bedroom walls
hiding spots where you'd let the paint run
bubble gum and cigarettes
whiskey on your breath and on my tongue

breakfast in bed
make up lies
for us both to phone in sick
days we won't miss

i just want to hold you
hold you
